They say to leap before you are ready, so we did: Ashley Brooks from Brooks Editorial and I started a podcast. It’s called Chasing Creative, and you can listen to the first two episodes now on iTunes or at www.ChasingCreative.com.
We are 100% unqualified to start a podcast, especially one about finding time to chase your own creativity. We ourselves fail more often than not. We get frustrated thinking about all that we should be doing when our brains and our bodies are telling us that we can totally watch just one more episode on Netflix before we get started. We know that we can’t be the only two creative people alive who struggle with this, so we decided to start talking about it.
Did we have time to start a podcast? Not really. We even joked about it on Twitter (which is also where we met, by the way. We’ve never, ever been in the same room!). But we made the time and got it done and it has felt amazing.
Did we know how to start a podcast? Nope. Not even remotely. But Google does! Chatting with a friend of a friend who is an audio-engineer in training helped, too. We also tapped into networks of cool people known for getting things done even when they don’t know how. Some tips from the Being Boss Facebook Group were a valuable place to start.
What’s this podcast about?
It’s about chasing what makes you feel alive. It’s about everyday people and how they can make creativity a priority in their everyday lives. We know it’s hard. We know that creative work only gets done in the leftover moments of life.
Ashley has a toddler and works from home. She chases her passions during nap times and in the early hours before her daughter is awake. I work a full time job in advertising and am 100% drained after being gone for 10 hours of the day, sometimes more. I write in the early morning hours, photograph things on Saturday mornings when the light is perfect, and am never, ever caught up on the latest movies.
We’ve already interviewed a stellar lineup of guests and will be releasing one episode each week for the first season. Our first episode is title START HERE and gives you a chance to get to know us. It also gave us a chance to work out all the technical glitches before we started pulling other people into the mix. Our second episode is an interview with Kenzie from Hello Neverland, and you’ll be amazed at what she has to say about the evolution of blogging, the differences between being a working mom and a stay-at-home mom who works (she’s done both in the last year!), and how following your passion is way better than following the crowd.
Chasing your creativity is about making choices, finding what works for you, and then making it happen. You can find links to the podcast website below, and you can join in the conversation on social media using the hashtag #ChasingCreative. We’d love if you’d come along for the ride and chase your creative along with us.
