What I Learned in February

This is my second time linking up with Emily Freeman, author and blogger extraordinaire, and her “What I Learned” link up at the end of every month. In the link up, Emily reflects on the truly profound – and just plain fun – things that she has learned in the last thirty days. Well, 28 in this case.

So, here is what I learned in February:

1.) I have to schedule downtime for myself. I have to, even on vacation. If I don’t get a couple hours a week to spend in silence, with a good book, or with a pen and some nice stationary, I get really cranky.

2.) In addition to number one, I have to schedule my life. Not rigidly, but enough to give myself an overall big picture, to schedule in that downtime to look forward to, and to make sure I am getting it all done.

3.) The BBC Sherlock is truly the best show on television, bar none. Just as I fell in love with the character of Mary … PLOT TWIST. And then I love her even more.

4.) More often than not, you find the encouragement you need just when you need it the most.

5.) I realized that I am fighting a constant battle between the part of the me that is a people-pleaser and the part of me that wants to guard my time for my own projects. Do any of you struggle with this?

So, what did you learn in February?

  1. I have recently been more proactive with scheduling down time and it really does make a huge difference!

    1. That is good to hear, Ashley! What have you been spending your downtime on?

  2. I’m so with you on #1 and #2.

  3. I agree – I love Mary and the new season of Sherock is wonderful! :) I had to set aside downtime for myself on a recent trip; it’s hard to set those boundaries but it’s so worth it!

    1. Thanks for chiming in, Helen! Boundaries are hard for me sometimes: I want everyone else to be happy, and sometimes I do so to the detriment of myself. Learning, learning, learning!

  4. Thanks so much for linking to my post! I’m glad that it was so relatable and I hope that those tips can help all of us feel a little less overwhelmed. I think scheduling downtime really helps cut down on overwhelm, too.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Alicia! Your post really did help me immensely.

  5. I absolutely resonate with your comment about finding encouragement when you need it most. I’ve been in an angsty state this month, and I’ve been given some surprising affirmation just when I needed it.

    1. I’m so glad that you found what you needed, Anna! I love reading your blog, so I do hope you keep pressing forward and writing through the fear. I’m trying to do the same!
