My Experience With Stitch Fix

When I first heard about Stitch Fix I thought I had found something to solve all the problems of the world.

Well, not really, but close. I like to shop, I just don’t have time to do it well. Working full time plus running a side gig and volunteering and having a family and trying to sell your house and have a social life really adds to not having hours and hours to spend scouring the racks at the mall. [That run-on sentence is essentially what my life feels like right now.] Which leads to continuing to wear most of the clothes that I still own from high school.
So, enter Stitch Fix: a service that lets you create a style profile and then sends you five items in your size to try on at home. Items from boutiques and companies that don’t exist at the mega-mall down the corner. You type in all your preferences, demonstrate styles that you would or would not wear, and then they send you clothes! I was really excited to try the service out for the first time last December . . . and was really, really disappointed.

Where I selected casual and classic, they sent me glitter peplum and purple corduroy. When I wrote 5’1″ with short legs, they sent skinny jeans that were five inches too long. I was so sad. I ended up keeping one sweater and sending the rest back. I did decide, however, not to judge them on Box #1 alone, especially in thanks to Emily Freeman’s tweet of encouragement:

Fix #2 arrived yesterday and I am more impressed. Here’s what I got:

Stitch Fix Teal Wrap Dress

This teal dress is cute, just a bit small. It’s also a little too low-cut and too lightweight: I would have to wear a tank and a slip under it, and that is just a lot for a girl to manage in a casual “brunch with friends” kind of setting, which is how I felt this dress should be worn. I will be sending it back. Also, note the kickin’ snowman socks. Wood floors are COLD in winter!

These purple stretch skinny jeans that don’t have a zipper. I texted a friend about this issue when I opened the box. Our exchange:

They were shockingly more easy to get into than I would have guessed. I had anticipated me hopping around the living room on one foot while trying to stuff myself into them and then needing to be extracted like Ross, but luckily that did not happen. They pulled on fine and actually looked okay. Just not $98 okay. Or four inches shorter okay. Or “isn’t this the same color that you sent me last time?” okay. I will be making a note in my profile about the length once again, and hoping they send shorter pants next time. And maybe I won’t get purple ones. Third time’s a charm, right?

Also, the white cotton top. It was so soft and comfortable and fit really well, except for the tie in the front. If it was a tie at the side, fine. But it tied strategically right in the middle awkwardly. Sadly, I am sending it back.
The winners:

This dress. The picture does not do it justice (ironic that the photographer’s living room lighting is atrocious? Yes.). The top is a soft cream and brown stripe and the bottom is a rich harvest orange. The material is nice and sturdy, and I think with leggings and a cardigan I will even be able to wear it in winter. Scott even liked it.

This scarf. I think I will be sending it back, but only because of the price. $42.00 is a little steep for me to spend on any accessory. The colors are gorgeous and the material is softer than I could have imagined. And it looks cute, if I may say so myself.
I’m up in the air as to whether or not I will try Stitch Fix again. Overall it is a really fun experience, but I just don’t know if I will ever be able to keep more than one item per box. Like Emily said, her boxes seem to get better with each try, so I am tempted since this Fix was much closer to “me” than the first one was. But I do have a friend who said she would do my shopping for me if I hand over my credit card. So there’s that avenue I can try . . .
What do you think? Would you try Stitch Fix?
Also – do you know of any good sweater tights? I could use a pair or two.
